Partners to the operation

In 1995, the French State and the local authorities decided to join forces and go ahead with plans to restore the maritime character of Mont St Michel so as to ensure that the rock remains an island and the edifice a deeply spiritual place.

The State and the Joint Council, chaired by the president of the Conseil Régional de Basse-Normandie, René Garrec, embarked on a full programme of surveys, which gave rise to the Detailed Engineering Programme in April 1999.
In addition to these surveys, over a 3-year period the Joint Council has been engaged in a preliminary dialogue with all members of the public concerned. The programme is all the clearer and richer for it.
This is the basis on which the joint investigation carried out by the government departments has enabled the Joint Council to finalize the programme prior to the public inquiries.

The operation is expected to cost € 140 million, jointly funded by the State and the local and regional authorities, with contributions from the European Union and the water board.
